Rural rate relief
If your property is in a settlement with a population of less than 3,000 which appears in the Council's rural settlement list, the Council may use its local discount powers to grant you 100% rural rate relief.
You must be the occupier and ratepayer of either:
- a general store or post office with a rateable value of £8,500 or less
- a public house or petrol filling station with a rateable value of £12,500 or less
Your eligibility will be assessed and decided upon by the Council's Business Rates department. Each application will be treated on its own merits and the Council will review:
- the service provided by the business and its importance to the local community
- the impact on the local community if the business should cease to trade
- whether the business is competing with or is ancillary to, other businesses operating within the rural settlement
GOV.UK provides more details on this type of relief. You can also view the Council's rural rate relief policy, rural settlement list and the Goose Green settlement boundary as PDF files.
