Check, challenge or appeal your rateable value
There is a business rates appeal process called 'check, challenge, appeal':
- the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) deals with checks and challenges
- the independent Valuation Tribunal Service deals with appeals
You can check the rateable value of your property at GOV.UK.
In the first instance contact the VOA and ask them to consider your rateable value. If you cannot reach an agreement with the VOA you have the right to appeal to a Valuation Tribunal Service. Their contact details are:

Transitional relief due to a change in your rating
Arrangements can be made to phase in the effect of significant changes to your business rates bill by limiting the amount it will rise following a revaluation. This is called transitional relief.
Transitional relief will show on your bill if applicable. GOV.UK provides more details on this type of relief.
