What you can do
If you think building development has taken place or is taking place without planning permission, you can report it to the Council.
There are certain issues the Council cannot investigate and these include:
- party wall or other ownership – this is a civil matter and you will need a solicitor if you cannot resolve the dispute with your neighbour
- boundary wall disputes – Land Registry will be able to advise only on where boundaries lie, otherwise you will need a solicitor if you cannot resolve the dispute with your neighbour yourself
- dangerous structures – contact Hertfordshire Building Control on 01438 879 990
- sewers, soakaways or other drainage matters (other than those relating to front garden paving) – contact Hertfordshire Building Control on 01438 879 990
- smell, noise and general pollution – report an environmental issue or nuisance
- health and safety – contact the Health and Safety Executive on 01234 220550
- matters relating to a public highway, including commercial vehicles parking in residential areas or on grass verges or traffic obstructions – contact Hertfordshire County Council Highways Department on 0300 123 4047
- graffiti or damage to property - report antisocial behaviour here
