Council urges the public to observe Remembrance Day safely

This year, the Council will observe the Remembrance Day commemorations a little differently to usual.

Ordinarily, the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Leader and Deputy Leader would each attend a Remembrance Sunday service and parade and lay a wreath at the four war memorials around the Borough.

However, no organised events or parades are taking place this year owing to the on-going coronavirus pandemic and the latest government restrictions. Instead, the Mayor of Broxbourne, Councillor David Taylor will informally lay a wreath at each war memorial on 11 November.

Members of the public are asked to privately observe the commemorations from their own homes by joining in with the two minutes’ silence from their doorsteps. The national silence takes place on Sunday 8 November at 11am.

Councillor Siobhan Monaghan, Cabinet Member for Housing and Community said:

Unfortunately, it is not possible for commemoration events to take place this year

The priority is to keep the public safe and the best way of honouring those that lost their lives in service to this country is to protect the community from further spread of the virus.

I hope residents of the Borough will join me on their doorsteps at 11am on Sunday 8 November to observe the two minutes’ silence.
