Statement in response to the Government's letter on Local Government Reform
Like all councils in two-tier areas, Broxbourne Council has now received its statutory invitation from the Government to submit proposals for the reorganisation of local government structures in Hertfordshire. The letter sets out the criteria to be considered and the timescale including initial plans to be submitted in March and full proposals later this year.
The Council’s priority is to ensure that any changes benefit Broxbourne’s residents and businesses, maintain excellent local services, whilst ensuring strong democratic accountability to the community.
There are currently differing views on the best model for local government in Hertfordshire and the Council is committed to working with the county council and other district and boroughs across the county to determine the best approach.
All 11 councils in Hertfordshire, with the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, are collaborating to develop a shared evidence-base to inform the options available.
This work is at an early stage and the views of residents, businesses, local government partners and other stakeholders across the public and private sectors will be essential as it develops.”
Councillor Mark Mills-Bishop, Leader of Broxbourne Council, said:
Along with the other district and borough leaders in Hertfordshire, I do not support the formation of a single unitary authority in Hertfordshire. Hertfordshire is home to more than 1.2 million people. An authority of that size will be unable to cater for the needs of local residents and the delivery of place-based services will be unmanageable on that scale.
My priority is to ensure that the residents and businesses located in Broxbourne can access the best possible services, whilst maintaining best value for money. Setting up a giant authority will not achieve this.
