Council calls for residents and local businesses to join the Clean Air movement

The nationally recognised Clean Air Day will be taking place on Thursday 20 June.

The special day aims to highlight the increasing dangerous of air pollution and measures which everyone can take to help reduce this.

According to official data from the Department for Travel and Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, cars and vans are the biggest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and other types of air pollution in the UK, harming public health and the planet.

The Council is supporting this year’s Clean Air Day by reminding and encouraging residents to adopt clean, sustainable, and active travel, including walking, or cycling through scenic pedestrian routes such as the recently improved New River path for example, taking a bus, car sharing with family and friends or even considering a switch to an electric vehicle for which public EV charging points are available across Borough car parks.

Local free Learn to Ride bicycle events are occasionally offered, as well as free bike maintenance pop-up events. To keep up to date with this and other free activities and events taking place across the Borough visit www.broxbourne.gov.uk/events or follow the Council’s social media platforms.

Local businesses can also help to make a difference to air pollution, by championing cleaner travel internally and taking advantage of sustainable initiatives such as the Council’s Electric Cargo Bike, which local businesses can sign up to trial free of charge for a minimum of one month. The modern Raleigh Pro Cargo storage bike, facilities greener transportation of deliveries and tools, produces less pollution whilst improving fitness levels, and reduces fuel, insurance, and vehicle maintenance costs. To register interest for this initiative, businesses can email sustainability@broxbourne.gov.uk
