Broxbourne continues to show support for Ukraine

The Borough of Broxbourne has been showing its solidarity with the people of Ukraine, and the Council is encouraging residents to show their support as well.

The Leader of the Council, Councillor Lewis Cocking, and Leader of the Opposition, Councillor Carol Bowman, released a joint statement on 28 February sharing their ‘deep concern about the escalating events in Ukraine’.

They added: “We stand united with you, and Broxbourne Council will do all it can to support those affected both at home and abroad.”

At a council meeting on 3 March, Councillor Cocking stood alongside other Hertfordshire council leaders and the flag of Ukraine to show unity with the country.

The Ukrainian flag has also been flown at the Broxbourne Council’s offices at Bishops’ College.

Then, on 8 March, the clock tower in Hoddesdon Town Centre was lit up in blue and yellow in partnership with Love Hoddesdon, as the Borough continues to show its support for the people affected by the conflict in Ukraine.

Together, Councillor Lewis Cocking and Councillor Carol Bowman said:

“We are devastated by the news and images coming out of Ukraine. We will continue to do what we can to support the country, and the residents of our Borough with friends and family in Ukraine. We are proud of our Borough for taking a stance during this conflict.”

Last week (March 7) saw a new Red Cross distribution centre opened in Cheshunt. Residents are encouraged to take along much-needed items, including medical supplies, toiletries and tools. You can leave them at EM Tuition, First Floor, 1&2 Broxbourne Business Centre, Fairways, EN8 0NL. Donations can also be made via the Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal.

Members of the public can make a donation towards the UN's humanitarian work through Ukraine Humanitarian Fund UN Crisis Relief. If you are a resident with friends and family in Ukraine and need information or support about what is happening, please contact the Ukrainian Embassy.

There are many organisations across the UK and internationally which have launched appeals. There are some simple steps to take to ensure donations are safe and being used effectively:

  • Check the charity’s name and registration number at www.gov.uk/checkcharity
  • Most charities with an income of £5,000 or more must be registered, which means they are regulated by The Charity Commission
  • Make sure the charity is genuine before giving any financial information
  • If in doubt, ask the charity or organisation for more information
