Confirm or update your voting details
Annual Voter Registration Canvass
Each year, local councils are legally required to review and update the electoral register to ensure it’s accurate and up to date. This process is known as the Annual Canvass.
Why You’re Being Contacted
You may receive a letter or an emaill from us asking you to check and confirm the voter registration details for your household. This is to help us identify who should be registered to vote at your address.
What You Need to Do
Please read the instructions in the message carefully. In most cases, you’ll be able to respond online or by phone.
If any information needs updating—such as adding or removing a resident—you must follow the steps to confirm the changes.
Only one person per household needs to respond.
If we don’t receive a response, we may follow up with reminder communications or a visit from one of our canvassers.
Ways to Respond
The easiest way to complete the canvass is online using the secure link and security codes provided in your communication.
If no changes are needed, you may also be able to confirm your details by phone or SMS.
Details on how to respond, including any security codes and deadlines, will be included in the letter or email you receive.
Adding New Residents?
If you add someone new to your household, they will also need to complete a separate voter registration application.
You can register online at any time by visiting: https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote (you will need your national insurance number to hand).
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to respond even if nothing has changed?
Yes. It's important we receive confirmation that your details are still correct. This helps maintain the integrity of the electoral register.
What happens if I don’t respond?
You may receive additional reminders or a personal visit from a canvasser to confirm your household information.
I received an email but didn’t expect one – is it genuine?
We may contact residents by email if you’ve previously given us permission to do so. Please check that the email comes from an official council address. If you're unsure, contact us to confirm.
