Types of elections
There are three types of elections held in the Borough:
- local government
- parliamentary
- police and crime commissioner
Local government elections are held every year on a four-year cycle. Each year during years one to three, a third of the Councillors for the Borough of Broxbourne are elected to each of the ten wards in the Borough. In year four, Councillors are elected to Hertfordshire County Council in each of the six divisions comprising the Borough of Broxbourne.
Parliamentary (General) elections for the Broxbourne Constituency are held on a five-year cycle or when called by Parliament.
Police and Crime Commissioner elections are held on a four-year cycle.
UK Parliamentary General Election– Thursday 4 July 2024
A UK Parliamentary General Election will be held on Thursday 4 July 2024. A Parliamentary election provides an opportunity to vote for a Member of Parliament (MP) to represent your local area (constituency) in the House of Commons for up to five years.

Significant election calendar dates
Friday 7 June 2024, 4pm - close of candidate nominations.
Tuesday 18 June 2024 - deadline for receiving applications for registration to vote.
Wednesday 19 June 2024, 5pm - deadline for:
- new postal vote applications
- amendments or cancellations of postal proxy vote applications
- changes to existing postal vote arrangements
- changes to existing proxy vote arrangements
Wednesday 26 June 2024, 5pm - deadline for new proxy vote applications (excluding emergency applications) and Voter Authority Certificate applications.
Thursday 4 July 2024, 7am to 10pm - polling day.
