Mental health support

Before seeking external support from mental health services, Mind UK recommend that anyone suffering with their mental health firstly ought to contact those closest to them for support.

Your doctor (GP) - It is recommended for those who are struggling with their mental health should contact their local GP practice first. Your doctor is there to help you with your mental health as well as your physical health.

Your doctor could help you by:

  • offer you support and treatments (such as talking therapies and medication)
  • refer you to a mental health specialist, such as a psychiatrist
  • recommend local support options.
  • making a referral to the Community mental health to examine a potential diagnosis (if relevant to you)

Therapist - A trained therapist and counsellor provide a range of different therapies through the NHS, for which your doctor could refer you. In some cases you might be able to contact them directly.

To find a NHS certificated therapist, visit the NHS Talking therapist page.

Friends, family, carer and neighbours - Sometimes speaking to someone you know and trust about your feelings could:

  • help you to find information
  • explore options of support with you
  • come with you to appointments
  • help you with everyday tasks
  • give you encouragement and support.

If you are find it difficult to talk to you friends and family, visit MIND UK for tips for support to overcome this.
