What is a pavement café licence and how much does it cost?
You will need to apply for a pavement café licence if you want to put tables, chairs and other furniture outside your premises in a public area.
What is a 'public area'?
A 'public area' is a place such as a pavement or a highway, in the open air, to which the public have a right of access without payment. This does not include a market area. The public area must be directly adjacent to your premises and cannot be, for example, on the other side of the street or outside other premises.
What does 'furniture' include?
'Furniture' includes those temporary (removable) items you provide for your customers' use when they are consuming food or drink. For example:
- counters or stalls for selling or serving food or drink
- tables, counters or shelves on which food or drink can be placed
- chairs, benches or other forms of seating
- umbrellas
- barriers
- heaters
How long is it valid for?
A pavement café licence is valid for 12 months. You will need to apply for a new licence at the end of the 12 months if you want to extend it.
How much does it cost?
The application fee for a pavement café licence is £100. Fees are non-refundable.
