Smoke control areas

Many areas of the UK are subject to smoke control laws which restrict residents from release smoke from chimneys and burning certain fuels.

A large part of the Borough of Broxbourne is subject to a smoke control area, with some use areas outside the zone and certain uses exempt from the restrictions.

  • In England you may have to pay a penalty of up to £300 if your chimney releases smoke in a smoke control area.
  • You can be fined up to £1,000 if you buy unauthorised fuel to use in an appliance that’s not approved by Defra.

You can find out more about smoke control areas on the government website, including more specific information about the rules.

You can also find a list of authorised fuels provided on the Department for Environmental, Food and Rural Affairs website.

There is also a number of appliances which are exempt from the smoke control rules, and you can find those on the DEFRA website as well.
