Bid Writing/Applying for funding

The process of writing a funding bid can be the difference between accessing funding and not accessing it.

Below are some key takeaways from trainings, discussions with partners and governing bodies on what will often go into successful funding bids:

  • Find out what the funders prioritise and ensure that is your focus in the application process e.g. The National Lottery’s Awards for All focuses heavily on the community, so a bid is more likely to be successful with this organisation if it focuses on community benefits.
  • Reach out to the organisation before applying to make sure that your project is appropriate for that specific fund.
  • Lean on the support that is available through your Active Local Partnership.
  • Try to demonstrate that you are applying for funding to meet a specific need within your club/community depending on the fund being applied for.
  • Use statistical data to back up why your project is needed. Herts Insight is a good starting place.
  • Consider the possibility of using a Sports funding consultancy to write your bid. They are mostly ‘no win no fee’ and the Herts Sport and Physical Activity Partnership commissioned a specific organisation to write bids on behalf of other organisations (find details at Funding with Funding4Sport).
